About Copyright
What is meant by copyright?
Copyright is an exclusive intellectual property right given to the creators of original musical, litreary and dramatic works. Broadly, copyright protects by law any asset or legal interest. And it provides the copyright owner the legal right to copy the work in any form, be it digital, print or recorded material.
What are copyright laws intended to protect?
The purpose of the copyright law is to promote the use of copyrights and at the same time protect the rights of the copyright owner. It was designed to encourage the continued creativity of the copyright owner, so that they would be rewarded for their efforts, and be able to go on to create new works.
Given the relationships CCLI has with our creative partners and the products and services we provide to our customers, these rights are aligned closely with our own core philosophies, as well.
Why does copyright affect you?
Churches, schools and organisations increasingly use technology to create, distribute or display songs, service sheets and content. Copyright owners should be fairly compensated for the copying of their works.
The copyright law is very clear on copying music. If you do not have express permission from the rightful owner of the song, you cannot make a copy. While the law is fair, it is not always practical. Some church music leaders have made efforts to honour the law and have tried to obtain permission first from the copyright owner before making copies. This is often a time-consuming challenge and in many cases an administrative nightmare.
That’s why more than 250,000 churches worldwide are taking advantage of the licences from CCLI to reproduce songs and make copies as well as show movie scenes and videos.
Regardless of region or whether it is an economic, moral, philosophical, or simply administrative objective, CCLI helps you honour copyright law and the creative people who author these valuable works.
